She was truly an extraordinary singer , much more than a singer of amazing high notes. I find Erna Sack's life story fascinating , but some details are sketchy. It can't have been easy for her to sing on through the war with her husband interned in a Nazi prison camp. She would have been under a certain amount of pressure from Goebbels and his ministry of German culture. There seems to be no written account of this time either from her or her husband Hermann. I have read that she was among the first to give concerts for the Allied forces when they reached Germany. Susequently she and her husband emigrated and she continued to sing for many years. Perhaps there is still a family member or friend who could fill in the missing details? Or a researcher who could get access to her letters , diaries?

Interesting -- I didn't realize MacWatters had studied with Estelle Liebling. She would have been about a decade ahead of Sills in her studio. Man, I would love to find a recording of Liebling singing in her prime. She sang often with John Philip Sousa's orchestra in concerts but no recordings have ever turned up to my knowledge.

Adele Kern is one of my favorite Koloratursoubrette sopranos or soprani leggeri of all time. Her limpidly clear tone and sweetly silvery emission make her ideal for all these delicious ingenues and cheeky pageboys. I especially love her as Zerbinetta, Fiakermilli, Oscar, Papagena, Urbain, Adele, Susanna, Despina, Blondchen, and Gilda. Interestingly enough, she also sang Angelina from Rossini's La Cenerentola.

I am amazed at the great number of coloratura sopranos that appear on RUclips that are entirely new to me-and I been collecting such fare on discs since 1948.
